Family caregivers are defined as people who dedicate their time and energy to supporting a family member or loved one who is unable to care for himself or herself. They are not only responsible for tending to another person’s daily needs, but also they are the main source of physical, emotional, and financial support. Family caregivers are truly a vital part of the healthcare system in the United States and they quite often go unrecognized. National Family Caregivers Month was created by the Caregiver Action Network to honor these unsung heroes and spotlight their dedication as well as the sacrifices that they make in order to care for their loved ones. Since 1997, every president has issued a proclamation that declared November as a month to celebrate family caregivers.
This year, the Caregiver Action Network decided that the theme for National Family Caregivers Month would be “Caregiving Around the Clock.” The organization strives to bring awareness to the fact that caregiving is a non-stop job that comes with challenges. If you would like to learn more about this theme, you can download the Caregiver Action Network’s flyer. Also, be sure to check out the Caregiver Action Network’s website as it is full of resources and support forums for all types of caregivers.
