October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s important to stay educated and raise awareness about breast cancer impact and prevention. There are several things you can do to raise awareness in your community and take steps to improving your health and the health of your loved ones. Take a look at steps you can take in making a difference:
Know the signs
Breast cancer can happen to anyone, but it is more likely to be found in older women and the risk for developing breast cancer increases with age. It is important to note that men can get breast cancer too. If you or a loved one has any risk factors, it is good to think about what you can do to prevent breast cancer or detect it early on. Here is who is more at risk of developing breast cancer:
- People with breast cancer or ovarian cancer in the family
- People with dense breasts
- People who have a history of radiation therapy
- People who have been previously diagnosed with breast cancer or a non-cancerous breast disease
- People who have an unusual reproductive history, such as those who started their periods before age 12 or started menopause after 55
- People who have been exposed to diethylstilbestrol, a synthetic form of estrogen prescribed to pregnant women in the mid-1900’s

Get involved
Getting involved in local or nationwide efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer is a great way to stay educated. The National Breast Cancer Foundation hosts a campaign in October every year to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer. This year, their theme highlights breast cancer screenings for everyone. Their National Mammography Program provides free mammograms and diagnostic services for women in need. “This year we RISE to ensure every woman has access to the screenings she needs and the support she deserves. When we RISE, we Rally in Screening Everyone.”
You can also get access to their many educational guides, including understanding the importance of early detection and knowing how to prepare for a mammogram. Learn more from The National Breast Cancer Foundation’s Educational Guides
Host a Fundraiser
A fundraiser is a great way to give back and raise awareness! There are a variety of routes you can take when deciding on your fundraising event. Start by choosing your preferred type of fundraising, creating a fundraising page, promoting the fundraiser to your family and friends, and thanking your supporters after the event is over. Different types of fundraisers you can organize include:
- Individual fundraising in honor of someone you know
- Employee fundraising through your place of work
- School fundraising at your children’s or grandchildren’s school
- Facebook fundraising or using other online platforms
