Did you know that falls are a serious issue that affects 1 in 4 Americans aged 65+ every year? Falling is the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries among our country’s older population and it can generate great personal as well as financial costs. Even though many believe that falls are unavoidable as you grow older, they are actually not a normal part of the aging process. Falls can be prevented through:
- simple lifestyle adjustments
- strength and balance exercises
- medication management
- regular vision checks
“Falls are actually NOT a normal part of the aging process. They can be prevented.”
The National Council on Aging will celebrate their 10th annual Fall Prevention Awareness Day on September 22nd. The council’s theme of 10 Years Standing Together to Prevent Falls is meant to spread awareness of fall prevention and to help older Americans understand how they take steps to avoid falling.
Several of our local Senior Centers are holding special throughout the month of September to raise awareness about how to prevent falls among older adults. Check out our events calendar to see which Senior Centers near you are holding an event in commemoration of Falls Prevention Awareness Day.
You can also visit our local senior center pages and download their class schedules to learn about special classes and fitness programs that will help you prevent falls.
