One of the most stressful parts of the holiday season is trying to figure out what to get everyone on your list. For weeks, you browse through stores and online shops in the hope of finding the best gifts that will keep you within your holiday budget. You sort through numerous magazines and clothing catalogues as well as read through every holiday gifting guide in your email inbox. Or, you wait in long lines and deal with crowds of shoppers just to find something that will put a smile on your friends’ and relatives’ faces.
With all of the variety and choice that we have today, it is getting increasingly difficult to find thoughtful and desirable gifts. From sons and daughters to coworkers and bosses, everyone seems to have his or her own style and taste that is hard to shop for. If you are having trouble coming up with gift ideas, then consider giving something that will have great future value. According to AARP’s journalist David Hochman, “The best present leads to a better future.” In his article “Gifts That Keep Giving,” Mr. Hochman describes how the best gifts do not necessarily have the biggest price tags, but instead they have the biggest future value. He groups these high value gifts into seven categories:
- Health
- Travel
- Finance
- Education
- Nature
- Time
- Work
Helping to pay for someone’s education or simply helping someone spend more time outdoors has more future value than a tin of gourmet cookies. For more information on the benefit of buying gifts with great future value, please check out the article on AARP’s website, “Gifts That Keep Giving”.
