A new initiative by the National Council on Aging (NCOA), National Senior Center Advocacy Day was celebrated on September 15th. NCOA chose this day to honor senior centers throughout the U.S. and to highlight the issues that affect senior centers at the local level. The Council wanted communities to hold events on September 15th that discussed public policy as well as encourage individuals to advocate for their senior center.
NCOA also hoped that National Senior Center Advocacy Day would bring attention to the wonderful services that senior centers provide older adults. The senior centers in Western Connecticut all have a wide selection of classes and programs that are meant to enrich and better the lives of their members. Not only do they have daily exercise and art classes, but also our local senior centers host special events throughout the year such as educational lectures, seasonal festivals, day trips, and cruises. They are committed to helping the elderly population in CT and they make sure that older adults in their communities remain active, healthy, and informed.
